Weekend Teaser: Let the season begin

Bees league opener on home ice against Phantoms

Everyone Active Shield stays in Romford for another year

Raiders have retained the Everyone Active shield as they proved the better team over the two games last weekend. Whilst classed by many as a friendly competition, it was clear that both teams wanted to get their hands on the trophy and were not holding back.

On Saturday Raiders made the trip to Slough. A goalless first period saw plenty of chances for both teams with Windebank in goal for Raiders and Preece between the pipes for Bees managing to deny all chances. It didn't take very long into the second period for Raiders to get their first goal on the scoreboard, Nick Leyer scored after just 19 seconds to be precise. They were to double their lead at 26.40 with a goal from Jacob Ranson. Not to be outdone by their rivals, Bees were to tie the period with goals from Adam Rosbottom and Dominik Gabaj. With no more goals in the third period it was all to play for in Romford the following evening.
On Sunday evening we saw a swap of goalies for both teams with James in goal for Raiders and Brett Shepherd for Bees. The Raiders proved a bit too much for Bees and goals from Vanya Antonov and Harry Harcup were not enough as Raiders won 5-2 on the night and 7-4 on aggregate.

Player of the Weekend Results

Congratulations to Vanya Antonov who is the second player of the weekend this season thanks to your votes on twitter with 64% of the vote. Will Stead was the runner up with 18%.

Pre-season done, now the focus is the league

It's really hard to preview the upcoming weekend because it has been tough to get a real understanding where all the teams are at. Bees welcome the Peterborough Phantoms to Slough on Saturday. Phantoms have had mixed fortunes in their pre-season with just the 1 win at home against the Tigers. Phantoms started their league campaign last night with a home fixture against the Hull Seahawks, in an 11 goal thriller. Phantoms were 4-1 up at the end of the 1st period but Seahawks skated away with the points with a 6-5 win. The Phantoms players to look out for are Martins Susters, Ales Padelek, Lukas Sladkovsky and Luke Ferrara.

Sunday sees the Bees take to road trip up to Shropshire where the Telford Tigers await them. Last weekend Tigers played home and away friendly fixtures with Peterborough Phantoms with each team winning on their home ice. The Tigers start their campaign away at Solway Sharks, the new team to the league who will be keen to make their mark early on.

It will need a good strong effort from the Bees to get the wins this weekend to kickstart their NIHL National campaign. Come on you Bees!
