Weekend Teaser: Bees hope to be faster than Lightning

Bees still picking up the points

A 50/50 weeekend for the Bees

Barely 12 hours after landing in the UK, Gianni Vitali was on the ice with the Bees for the first fixture of the weekend against the Telford Tigers. In addition to Gianni, Bees saw the return of Harvey Stead who has been out for a few weeks. The Bees welcomed the Telford Tigers to Slough for their first visit this season and Tigers soon found themselves chasing the Bees as goals by Gabaj and Balaz gave the Bees a 2-0 lead at the end of the first. Tigers came out all fired up for the second period and clawed back the 2 goal lead to leave the teams tied at the 40 minute mark. It's fair to say that we don't see much roughing/fighting in Slough but Tigers decided to liven things up a bit at the end of the second. Tiger's Peca received a 5+game penalty for a one-sided altercation with Bees' Morris, and Balaz received a 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct was called at the same time. Then on the buzzer Harvey Stead left the bench to sqaure up with Jake Price of the Tigers who had decided to have a dig at Dominik Gabaj. Both Price and Harvey received 5 minutes for fighting but as Harvey left the bench he also received a game misconduct on top. The third period was to see another Tigers player (Scott McKenzie) take on Liam Morris and this time Liam fought back, both players receiving 5 minute fighting penalties. It seems that lately many teams feel Liam is the player to antagonise, he has shown that not only can he refrain from getting involved when he needs to but he's also not going to put up with it either. His savvy responses have caused more than one team to find themselves in penalty trouble. There were to be no further goals in regulation which forced the game into overtime and just 59 seconds into the 5 minutes Vanya Antonov scored with two Tigers on him by sliding the puck under Day to give Bees the 3-2 win.

Sunday saw the Bees make the journey to Peterborough. The third meeting of the teams this season but the first in Peterborough. These two teams are very evenly matched and were neck and neck all the way. Phantoms scoring an empty net goal to give them the 5-3 win.Bees goals coming from Gabaj, Balaz and Gianni Vitali. If Vanya Antonov had ben able to play the result may well have been different as it's fine margins between these teams. This result allowed the Phantoms to swap places with Bees in the league but Bees do have a game in hand.

Player of the Weekend Results

This week's vote was a close call but Vanya Antonov beat off the competition for the second week in a row to be our player of the weekend with 33% of the fans vote. Liam Morris came in a close second with 29% and Gianni Vitali was just behind with 27%.

Player News

Edgars Landsbergs has decided to leave the Bees. Edgars joined from the Bison in the summer and leaves the club after playing 15 games with two goals and two assists to his name. We wish Edgars the best of luck for the future.

Next - Just the one game this weekend as the Lightning visit Slough

With just one fixture for the Bees this weekend they welcome the Lightning to Slough on Sunday evening. It's the first time the teams have met in Slough this season. Lightning got the better of Bees in their own rink coming out 7-4 victors but Bees are more than capable of  taking the win in Slough. It's been said that Lightning do not work well in the smaller rinks in the league and rinks don't come any smaller than ours so hopefully this will work in our favour. When the teams last met there was an altercation between Bees' Liam Morris and Lightning's James Griffin for which Griffin received a two game suspension. This may still be on Griffin's and his teammates minds, we will see on the night. This game counts towards the league and the cup so Dom and the boys will not want the Lightning to settle on the ice. It's definitely a game not to miss!

All that is left to say is safe travels to the Lightning and their fans travelling on Sunday. Come on you Bees!
